Curriculum Modern Foreign Languages (MFL)
Our Vision: To deliver a high quality teaching and learning experience so that all learners want to continue with their language learning beyond school.
Year 7:
In Y7, half of the year group study French and the other half study Spanish for 4 hours per fortnight. Students begin the year with a foundation in Term 1 of the basics e g greetings, numbers, alphabet etc building on what they may have covered in primary learning.
This is then followed by the study of the topics of Self and Family, School and Hobbies. By the end of the year, our pupils are expected to express some of their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and writing.
Year 8:
In Y8, students continue to learn the language that they started to study in Y7 (French or Spanish) for 3 hours per fortnight. Our aim for Y8 students is to foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world through a wide variety of interactive activities, in an environment where pupils can be active learners.
The topics studied with students are based on Free Time, Home and Beyond, and Food and Lifestyle.
Year 9:
The Y9 curriculum is a continuity of the study of French or Spanish (or both languages in some cases). Our aim is to enable pupils to understand and communicate personal and factual information that goes beyond their immediate needs and interests, developing and justifying points of view in speech and writing, with spontaneity, independence and accuracy.
By the end of KS3, pupils are expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified in the programme of study. This should provide suitable preparation for further study. The topics studied with students are based on Life of a Teenager, Health, and Holidays.
