Students : Curriculum : Science

The science faculty aims to provide a curriculum

  • to meet with the needs of all students
  • to develop their knowledge and understanding of science
  • to develop their  ability to think and act scientifically
  • to enable them to appreciate the contribution that science makes to society
  • to contribute to their development in literacy, numeracy and information technology
  • to provide access to careers in science related contexts
  • to contribute to their personal development in terms of encouraging their enjoyment of science and their sense of curiosity, developing a respect for living things and the environment and  for other people’s points of view, and developing skills in reasoning and problem solving.

The science curriculum at Nailsea School provides balanced courses with all pupils studying elements of biology, chemistry and physics to Key stage IV.

The faculty uses a range of teaching and learning styles set out in schemes of work in order to meet the above aims. These include experimental and investigative work, small group discussions, project work, the use of secondary resources to enable pupils to do research, and a variety of reporting and presentation modes. The emphasis is on empowering students to make decisions for themselves in increasing degrees throughout their curriculum.
