English and Media Faculty
Welcome to the English and Media Faculty at Nailsea School. English is a core subject in the National Curriculum. Students in Year 7 to 9 have six lessons of English per fortnight; in Years 10 and 11 they have seven lessons and follow a course that leads to GCSEs in both English and English Literature.
Studying the media is built into English lessons at KS3 and there are GCSE and Btec Media Studies options at KS4. Media Studies is a popular A Level choice, as are English Literature and English Language. We have additional support for students in Year 7 and Year 9 whose basic literacy skills are weak. A faculty Teaching Assistant helps with students in all years.
We want all students to develop their communication skills to their full potential. We also want them to develop the qualities as thinkers, readers, writers and speakers that will help them to thrive in their future lives and to make sense of the changing world they will inhabit. A good deal of this thinking and understanding will develop through the study of novels, plays and poems.
Studying the media is important because film, television, advertising, magazines and the internet are powerful features of our culture and have a big influence on our values and attitudes. We are well equipped to develop media-related understanding and practical skills.
