Students : Curriculum : Science : Chemistry
Key Stage 3 – Years 7, 8 and 9
Chemistry is taught as a part of general science and the school follows closely
the schemes of work in “Exploring Science” a commercial course published
by Longmans (www.longman.co.uk). In Years 7 and 8 students are taught in their
tutor groups by, usually, just one of our science staff in a laboratory.
The
Chemistry content in Year 7 covers these main themes:
- Acids and Alkalis
- Simple Chemical reactions
- Solids, Liquids and Gases
- Solutions
In Year 8 the main themes are:
- Atoms and Elements
- Compounds and Mixtures
- Rocks and Weathering
- The Rock Cycle
In Year 9 students are broadly banded into upper and lower groups though the
content of the course is similar with the upper groups working at a faster pace
and covering some extension material.
The main themes in the Year 9 science curriculum
are:
- Reactions of Metals and Metal Compounds
- Patterns of Reactivity
- Environmental Chemistry
- Using Chemistry
