Students : Curriculum : Maths

What about extra maths activities outside the classroom?

In the Mathematics Faculty, we are always trying to promote students enjoyment of mathematics as a subject in its own right.  To this end, we take part in several local and national events as well as organising our own within school.

UKMT Maths Challenge

Our most able students in each year group take part in the UKMT National Mathematics Challenge, the Junior Challenge being for Years 7 & 8, Intermediate for Years 9 & 10 and the Senior Challenge for Years 11, 12 & 13.  Several students each year are successful in getting through to the next rounds.

Year 6/7 Masterclasses

In Year 7, we invite our most able students to join with the best mathematicians from our local primary schools for a joint Year 6 & 7 masterclass in terms 2, 4 and 6.

Year 7 Adventure Game

All Year 7 take part in a mathematical adventure game at the end of the year, with teachers and Year 12 students guarding the treasure, which can only be found by solving the mathematical clues.

Year 8 Masterclasses at UWE

Eight Year 8 students are given the opportunity to attend masterclasses at UWE. These are run by mathematics teachers or lecturers for a series of six Saturday mornings either in the Autumn or Spring terms.

Numeracy Weeks

During the year, the whole school takes part in numeracy weeks, focusing on mathematics across the curriculum.  At lunchtimes during this week, students can take part in a variety of mathematical fun activities, games and competitions run by the Maths Faculty.
