What happens in Yr8?

You will continue to have either 6 hours of French or 6 hours of German per fortnight.  The difference this year is that you will be arranged into sets:  Express Sets = quick pace; Standard Sets = more regular pace and opportunities for lots of extra practice.

Typical topics covered:  daily routine, hobbies, going out, holidays, clothes, being a tourist.

You will continue to develop your listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.  You will be encouraged to expand your bank of useful phrases and use them as often as possible in as many contexts as possible.

Homework:  Regular homework (2 pieces per week) will help you to memorise phrases and will give you a chance to practise using them in your own spoken or written work.

Assessment:  Just as in Yr7, you should expect regular mini-tests and a number of formal assessments (which will include 2x open-ended speaking tests and 2x open-ended writing tests) that will help track your progress.  You will become increasingly aware of your strengths, and where there are weaknesses you will be set targets for improvement.  If you try hard to address these targets you should continue to make good progress!

Trips abroad:  During Yr8 you will be given the opportunity to go either to France or to Germany, depending on the language you are studying.  These trips are very popular and students enjoy learning about cultural similarities and differences and trying out the language they have been learning at school.  The experience is fun and incredibly rewarding!
