What happens in Yr7?
From September 2008 all students joining Yr7 will study 3 hours of French and 3 hours of German per fortnight.
Typical topics covered are: family, friends, hobbies, school life, likes and dislikes.
You will listen to these languages on CD or cassette and pick out key details; you will learn to read and pick out details; more importantly, you will learn lots of useful words and expressions that will help you to talk and write about the things that interest you and to express your own opinions. Lots of French and German will be used in the classroom and you will be expected to be brave and have a go yourself! This can be fun and very rewarding.
Homework: you should expect 2 pieces of homework per week (1xFrench and 1xGerman). You may have to learn vocabulary, complete exercises from your workbook or write something in the foreign language. If you have a Collins Easy Learning Dictionary for both languages it will certainly be useful. Give 100% effort to each homework task and you should make good progress.
Assessment: you will have mini-tests throughout the year to check that you are learning well; you will have several formal assessments for French and for German that test your listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. These formal assessments will be spread across the year. You will be given opportunities to assess your own work (self assessment) and the work of others (peer assessment). This way, you will understand how to make improvements.
