Parents : Support & Guidance : Gifted & Talented

Guidelines:

The term “gifted” refers to academic strengths whereas “talented” refers to ability in such creative/cultural activities as music, art, drama, dance and sport.

We aspire to the exemplary level requirements of the National Quality Standards in Gifted and Talented Education developed by the National Academy for Gifted and Talented youth (otherwise referred to as NAGTY), using these standards as a measure of our provision.

Leadership of Gifted and Talented provision is the responsibility of a specified member of the school’s senior leadership team and a specified school governor.

Provision for gifted and talented students is also a specified responsibility within each faculty and pastoral team in the school.

Whilst it is clearly recognised that all students have individual gifts and talents, the school follows DfES guidelines in identifying its top 5-10% in the Gifted and Talented Students’ Register through the use of a broad range of quantitative and qualitative criteria, and taking account of evidence from in and beyond the school.

The register is shared with, and contributed to by all teaching staff, and it is regularly reviewed.

The parents/carers of registered students are informed of their child’s registration, and of the particular gifts or talents identified.

The parents of students whose baseline data (principally CAT scores and GCSE points) qualifies them for nomination to NAGTY are informed, with an invitation for NAGTY nomination by the school.

The needs of gifted and talented students are met in the curriculum through effective classroom provision, including differentiated teaching and learning, and extension opportunities.

Extension activities are provided by curriculum and pastoral teams beyond the classroom; curriculum and pastoral teams also promote and facilitate activities organised by other providers.

The curriculum is structured with some flexibility to allow for individual preferences as well as increased challenge for some students.

Qualitative and quantitative data are used to track the progress of students and students are regularly required to reflect upon their own progress and engage in the direction of their own learning

The attainment of gifted and talented students in public tests and examinations is evaluated against their targets and included in the reporting of attainment to governors.

The attainment and achievements of gifted and talented students are celebrated in school publications such as newsletters and the annual school prospectus, with the school making active efforts to include out of school achievements.

As resources allow, Nailsea School collaborates with partner Primary Schools in providing for Key Stage 2 gifted and talented students in the area.

Resources are allocated to provision for gifted and talented students in several ways, such as through subject “capitation” budgets and staffing, as well as through additional discretionary support for specific events, within the school’s means.  Family “hardship” applications for support for gifted and talented activities will be considered, according to established school procedure.
