Citizenship at Nailsea School

Citizenship is currently taught through discrete lessons in years 7, and 10 and 11. The Citizenship delivery is often combined with the P.S.H.E (personal social and health education) curriculum.  Our aim is for all students to have one lesson of PSHCE a fortnight.

As well as discrete lessons, Nailsea has a programme of three collapsed days throughout the year that cover the curriculum areas of Work Related Learning, Political Literacy and Sex and Relationships Education.  Students are challenged to use skills such as teamwork, communication, decision making, analysis, crisis management as well as active participation.

To help us deliver this provision in an exciting and innovative way, we have enlisted the expertise of outside agencies such as the ‘No worries’ sexual health clinic; the Armed forces and industrial visits; as well as theatre companies delivering sexual health messages and magic shows tackling the subject of bullying and how to combat it.

At the end of each key stage, students are reported against the national standards for Citizenship and PSHE.  The lessons provide an opportunity for students to express their views and be assessed by both their peers and teachers.
