Parent Forum

Posted by & filed under Uncategorized, What we're talking about.

Our next Parent Forum will be held on 30th January, the topic will be Mental Health and will be a useful discussion for all parents and carers to be involved in. The speaker for this event is Lorna Kerings a Mental Health Worker from the Youth Inclusion Support Project. Parents are invited to come along at 6.30 pm for refreshments and to chat with staff, the talk will begin and 7 pm and there will be an opportunity for discussion afterwards.

Parent Forums are a useful opportunity for visitors to learn about some of the issues that our young learners may be exposed to. The forums are usually held termly and are a good way for parents to keep informed. In the past they have covered such issues as child exploitation and safe internet use.

Last term’s Parent Forum was on the topic of Substance Abuse with guest speaker Kaytee Williams – the talk was very well received – here are some of the comments made by parents who attended.

“Really interesting and informative Parent Forum last night at Nailsea School about substance abuse – these events are really worth attending. Look out for one on Mental Health next term”. – JW via Facebook

“Thanks for organising these events, they are really helpful and informative. Just more brilliant forward thinking ideas coming from a great school”. – SF via Facebook

“Even if you might think this “won’t affect my family” it is still worth attending these events. Just to ensure you’re not missing the signs and arm yourself with the facts and where to find help and advice if you ever suspect your child is abusing. Recreational use of alcohol and drugs can so quickly become a dependency.
An extremely informative and balanced approached this evening. It’s not about the “just don’t do it “ approach it’s about educating ourselves so that we can talk to and help our young adults navigate the risks and enable them to have the courage to make informed decisions. Thank you Nailsea School for once again providing opportunity for parents to stay educated. I look forward to the Mental Health forum.” – KS via Facebook

“Really informative evening thanks to Mr Mawford/Nailsea School for organising and Kaytee Williams for giving up her evening to come and talk to us. The parent forum events are great, looking forward to the next one on mental health.” – LN – via Facebook

If you were unable to attend or would like a memory refresher – Kaytee has kindly provided us with a copy of her presentation.
